Industry overview
Iron and steel are the basic input of sectors such as construction, machinery, automotive, energy and defence. According to the Turkish Steel Producers Association (ÇÜD), Türkiye produced 38.1 million tons of crude steel in 2025, an increase of about 3.3% over 2024. ÇÜD statements point out that the sector's installed capacity is around 60 million tons and that a significant part of this capacity is unused.
Production methods
Integrated plants process iron ore in blast furnaces and converters; electric arc furnace plants melt scrap. Most production in Türkiye is scrap-based, and scrap imports account for a significant share of the sector's costs.
PRODUCT GROUPS
Long products: rebar, wire rod, profiles and flat bars are the foundation of the construction sector. Flat products: hot- and cold-rolled sheet, galvanized and painted coil and plate are used for white goods, automotive, pipes and construction. Pipes and profiles: produced by welding from flat products or drawn seamless.
Production centres
In flat steel, Zonguldak (Karadeniz Ereğli) and Hatay (İskenderun) stand out; in integrated and long-product production, Karabük; and in scrap-based production, Kocaeli (Dilovası–Gebze), İzmir (Aliağa) and other industrial regions. Kırıkkale has a long-established steel-making tradition.
